Nigerian Police Claims Minor Suspects’ Fainting in Court Was “Deliberate and Scripted”
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has characterized the fainting of several minor suspects during their arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja as a “deliberate and scripted” act intended to draw negative attention.
This statement follows an incident where some of the 75 minors, aged between 12 and 15, collapsed in court while facing charges related to their participation in the August 2024 End Bad Governance protests.
The minors were charged with ten counts, including terrorism and an attempt to overthrow the government, stemming from their arrests on August 3rd. Since then, they have been held in detention.
In response to the criticism surrounding the arraignment, the NPF issued a statement through ACP Olumiyowa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer. The statement described the court incident, where six suspects fainted, as orchestrated to attract media scrutiny.
“The Nigeria Police Force has recently arraigned 76 individuals on serious charges, including terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony, concerning offenses such as the destruction of public property and threats to national security,” the statement read.
The NPF emphasized its adherence to legal standards during the detention and arraignment process, ensuring that the suspects’ rights are respected, including access to medical care. The police maintained that medical assistance was promptly provided to the fainting individuals, underscoring their commitment to the welfare of those in custody.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu later granted bail to 67 of the minors, set at N10 million each, with those granted bail needing to provide a surety who is a civil servant. The minors face serious charges including treason and conspiracy, alleged to be part of efforts to destabilize the country.
During the court proceedings, many of the minors appeared malnourished, with four requiring immediate medical attention after struggling to stand.
The NPF’s statement sought to reassure the public of its professionalism and commitment to justice, urging people to consider the case with impartiality. As the legal process continues, the NPF aims to align with best practices while respecting human dignity.
