Collapsed mining site kills 13 in Plateau
At least 13 people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a mining site in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State. The Chairman of Bassa LGA, Joshua Riti, confirmed the tragic incident on Monday in Jos.
Riti expressed his sorrow over the loss of life, revealing that the accident occurred on Saturday. He explained that the collapsed mining site is located at the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs.
The LGA chairman noted that seven of the victims were from Bassa LGA. “This is a heartbreaking incident. These young people were simply trying to earn a living. They set out to use their energy productively in the face of the current economic challenges, only to meet an untimely death,” he said. Riti extended his deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.
Reports indicate that most of the victims were young people, aged between 18 and 30 years old.
