Retirees of Chevron Nigeria Limited staged a protest on Tuesday at the company’s headquarters in Lagos, voicing their grievances over a range of issues, primarily the delay in payment of their pensions. The retirees, carrying placards with various messages such as “We say no to dissolution of CNCPFA,” “Chevron stop discrimination against retirees,” and “Nigeria is a sovereign nation: respect our laws above your policies,” expressed their dissatisfaction with how they have been treated.
The protestors raised concerns about the outsourcing of their pension fund, questioning whether Chevron had divested from Nigeria. They also accused the company of violating Nigerian laws, expressing frustration over the lack of engagement with the Pension Commission (PenCom), and highlighted the freezing of their pensions for decades. The retirees called for fair treatment, demanding that Chevron, as a multinational oil company, adhere to Nigerian laws and offer the same respect to their retirees as they would to those from other international oil companies operating in the country.
