NiMet Predicts Sunshine and Dust Haze Across Nigeria, Cautions Public on Weather Conditions

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted sunshine and dust haze from Monday to Wednesday across the country.

According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday, the northern region will experience slight dust haze on Monday, with local visibility ranging between 2 km and 5 km throughout the forecast period.

In the North Central region, the weather will be characterized by sunny skies in a hazy atmosphere for the duration of the forecast. Meanwhile, the southern region is expected to see sunny skies with patches of clouds. There are also prospects of thunderstorms and light rains in parts of Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States during the afternoon and evening hours.

On Tuesday, NiMet predicts a moderate dust haze in the northern region with visibility dropping to less than 1,000 meters. The North Central region will experience slight dust haze with visibility between 2 km and 5 km. The southern region will continue to experience sunny skies with occasional cloud patches, with potential for afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Light rains are expected over Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

By Wednesday, moderate dust haze will persist in the northern region, with visibility of less than 1,000 meters. The North Central region will see slight dust haze with local visibility between 2 km and 5 km. The southern region will continue to experience sunny skies with patches of clouds, and there is a likelihood of afternoon and evening thunderstorms with light rains in parts of Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

NiMet also warned that dust particles are suspended in the air, advising the public, especially individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma, to take necessary precautions. Additionally, the agency cautioned that strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are expected. Airline operators are urged to obtain weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning during this period.
