House of Representatives Moves to Remove Umar Danladi as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal

The House of Representatives has followed the Senate’s lead in invoking constitutional provisions for the removal of Umar Danladi, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), over alleged misconduct. This motion, led by Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, cited Paragraph 17(3), Part 1, Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, and Section 22(3) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, which mandates the President to act on an address supported by a two-thirds majority of both the Senate and House of Representatives for the removal of a CCT Chairman due to misconduct.

The motion highlighted the controversy surrounding Umar Danladi, specifically a public altercation he had with a security guard at Banex Plaza Shopping Complex in Abuja. This incident led to his invitation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions. During his initial appearance, Umar admitted to his involvement in the brawl but later refused to attend further sessions, hindering the committee’s investigation into the matter.

Lawmakers emphasized that the Chairman of such a prominent institution should embody moral integrity, accountability, and probity. They argued that Umar’s behavior has fallen far short of these standards, making him unfit to continue in his role as CCT Chairman.
