Residents of Festac Town in Lagos State have called on the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EkoDisco) to urgently address the persistent power outages plaguing the historic community.
They also urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to intervene and stop EkoDisco from exploiting residents by classifying them under Band B, despite many households receiving less than five hours of electricity daily.
Felix Ajayi, an artisan in the area, spoke to newsmen about the worsening situation, saying, “Since President Bola Tinubu took office, power supply has been dismal. EkoDisco claims to have placed Festac on Band B, but the reality is even worse than we can describe. Businesses are suffering due to the unreliable power supply.”
Another resident, Ugochukwu Anyanwun from 23 Road, expressed frustration over the state of the community, stating, “It is heartbreaking to see Festac heading toward total collapse. Just like the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) is indifferent to the deteriorating state of the estate, especially the roads, the Amuwo-Odofin LGA is no better.
Reporting the issues to local officials often leads to accusations of bitterness against the chairman. We implore Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to come to our rescue.”
Odike Ubandinuju, a pensioner from 41 Road, also shared his experience, revealing that his complaint to the Agboju office was met with a suggestion to escalate the matter to the Marina office. “It is clear that the Band B classification is just a façade, as we are paying exorbitantly for constant darkness,” he said.
Residents are urging both the state and federal governments, as well as relevant agencies, to address these power supply issues and provide relief to the long-suffering community.
