Okpebholo Swears in Three Judges Rejected by Obaseki Administration

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has officially sworn in three judges who were previously rejected by the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Festival Hall in Government House, where Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring fairness and inclusivity in the state’s judiciary.

The newly sworn-in judges Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe join five others who were appointed earlier this year. Okpebholo explained that, despite being recommended and cleared by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in June 2023, the three judges had been left out of the appointments by the previous administration, which only swore in five out of the eight recommended candidates.

Reflecting on this, Governor Okpebholo expressed that no individual should face discrimination or marginalization for personal reasons or lack of political influence. He emphasized that the judiciary must operate with impartiality and uphold the rule of law, making it clear that all individuals, regardless of their connections, deserve equal opportunity in public service.

In his speech, Governor Okpebholo also reiterated his respect for the doctrine of the Separation of Powers, highlighting the critical role of the judiciary in maintaining justice. He stated that the appointment of these three judges would strengthen the state’s judicial system and ensure that justice is dispensed impartially and efficiently.

In response, Ojo Maureen Osa, speaking on behalf of the three judges, expressed gratitude to the governor for their appointment, particularly so early in his administration. She assured the governor and the people of Edo State that they would dispense justice “without fear or favour” and uphold the integrity of the judiciary.

This move marks a significant step in Governor Okpebholo’s effort to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and deliver on his promise to promote justice and fairness in Edo State.
