President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a $500,000 contribution to fulfill Nigeria’s outstanding obligations to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) for the 2022–2023 period.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Musa Dangiwa, on Wednesday during the second meeting of the UN-Habitat 2024 Executive Board in Nairobi, Kenya. The news was shared in a statement from the ministry.
The contribution is part of Nigeria’s financial commitment outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UN-Habitat and will directly support the operations of the UN-Habitat Country Office in Nigeria.
Dangiwa noted that this funding would enhance Nigeria’s partnership with UN-Habitat, supporting initiatives in capacity-building, advisory services, and mobilizing multi-bilateral funds to drive sustainable urbanization and housing development in the country.
The statement highlighted that this contribution aligns with the terms of the MoU for the 2022–2027 period, focusing on key projects such as sustainable housing, infrastructure improvement, and addressing urbanization challenges. The partnership aims to combine national and international expertise and resources to tackle Nigeria’s growing urbanization issues.
UN-Habitat also commended Nigeria for its dedication to transformative change in human settlements and urban development. The statement emphasized the progress made during Nigeria’s tenure as Chair of the Executive Board, particularly in evaluating Assembly resolutions, reviewing work plans and budgets, and advancing the 2026–2029 strategic plan.
