Tinubu Assures ECOWAS Commitment to Diplomacy for Reintegrating Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed in Abuja that the welfare and interests of the citizens of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger remain a priority for ECOWAS leaders, emphasizing that wisdom and diplomacy will play key roles in reintegrating these nations into the regional bloc.

During a meeting on Wednesday with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of ECOWAS, acknowledged that the leadership of the three countries had been reluctant to present clear transition programs with specific dates. He emphasized that while ECOWAS remains committed to diplomatic efforts, it will not tolerate unconstitutional governments.

“Our relationship of mutual respect will continue as we reassess the situation in the three countries,” Tinubu said. “What I can assure is that we will not tolerate unconstitutional governments. We will continue to lead by example, keeping in mind that innocent citizens are often the victims in these military-led regimes.”

He further stated that ECOWAS would continue to explore diplomatic channels to resolve the situation without punishing the citizens of these countries, who are not in control of the power structures. “We will continue to allow free movement and trade,” Tinubu assured, adding that while the transition programs in these countries remain uncertain, the people should not suffer as a result.

The President also reiterated that ECOWAS would leave the door open for the return of democratic governance in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, emphasizing the bloc’s commitment to the wellbeing of the citizens. “ECOWAS will stand for democracy, and we are mindful of the citizens’ welfare,” he added.

In his response, German President Steinmeier stressed the significant economic and security implications for West Africa if these countries do not reintegrate into the regional community. “The re-integration of these countries is critical for the economic stability and security of the region,” he noted. Steinmeier, who had just met with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, acknowledged the challenges facing ECOWAS and urged continued diplomatic efforts. He also suggested that while working on these diplomatic efforts, ECOWAS should be prepared with emergency plans to ensure future economic cooperation in the region.

Both leaders highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue to navigate the complex situation in these countries.
