The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Zamfara State Command, has successfully recovered a stolen Mercedes-Benz C300, a Samsung Galaxy phone, and counterfeit currency totaling $7,000. The items were seized from Mohammed Dauda Ismail, a resident of Kano State.
This was revealed by Commandant Sani Mustapha of the Zamfara State Command during a press briefing where the suspect was paraded at the Command Headquarters in Gusau, the state capital. Mustapha explained that on December 12, 2024, a 33-year-old man, Alkasim Kabir, also from Kano State, reported the theft of his Mercedes-Benz C300, registered DAL 68 HK Kano, along with a Samsung Galaxy phone and an iPhone 12.
Tracking efforts led authorities to several locations the suspect passed through before removing the tracking device. The suspect traveled from Kano State to Zamfara via the Dayi-Malumfashi-Funtua route. Based on intelligence and a social media advertisement, the authorities were able to identify the suspect’s whereabouts and apprehended him on Sunday, December 15, 2024, around 11:30 a.m. in a restaurant near Masjid Umar Bin Khattab (Masallacin Kanoma) along Sokoto Bypass Road in Gusau.
Commandant Mustapha revealed that the suspect, Mohammed Dauda, confessed to stealing the items under false pretenses. He had initially left the owner’s residence in Kano to refill gas at a plant but instead fled with the car and phones. Further investigation confirmed that the stolen iPhone 12 was located in Lokoja, Kogi State, and the buyer has agreed to return it to the rightful owner.
Mustapha emphasized that investigations are still ongoing, and the suspect will be arraigned in court once the inquiry is complete. He assured the public and the press of further updates on the case as developments unfold.
In an interview, Dauda admitted he had attempted to sell the stolen car and phones but was unable to do so due to the lack of car documents.
In related news, the NSCDC has deployed 550 personnel across the 14 Local Government Areas of Zamfara State, including worship centers, to ensure peace and security during the Christmas celebration. Commandant Mustapha stated that the officers would be strategically positioned to ensure a smooth and peaceful festive season.
