Suspension of Edo LGA chairmen a setback to democracy – ALGON

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, has strongly condemned the Edo State House of Assembly’s suspension of 18 local government chairmen and councillors, describing it as a set back to democracy.

In a statement by the ALGON National Publicity Secretary, Hamisu  Anani, the National Executive Council and the BOT, after an emergency meeting, have jointly condemned the decision that was made after Governor Monday Okpebholo accused the chairmen of disobeying his instructions by refusing to submit their financial records to the state government.

He said ALGON views this suspension as a setback for democracy and an abuse of power, particularly since the chairmen were not given a chance to defend themselves.
