President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In a statement issued by the State House on Friday, Tinubu praised Singh as a visionary leader whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria-India relations.
Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Tinubu recalled Singh’s historic visit to Nigeria in 2007, where he became one of the few global leaders to address a joint session of the National Assembly.
“Prime Minister Singh’s visit to Nigeria in 2007 was a landmark moment in the relationship between our two nations,” said Tinubu. “His diplomatic contributions laid the foundation for a strategic partnership that has since flourished, enhancing political and economic ties between Nigeria and India.”
The Nigerian President highlighted Singh’s dedication to fostering cooperation in various sectors, including defense trade, education, culture, health, science and technology, and ICT. Tinubu further commended Singh’s leadership in guiding India through significant economic reforms during a time of global challenges, which helped drive growth and prosperity.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I salute Prime Minister Singh’s remarkable service to his country and the world. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations,” Tinubu added, expressing gratitude to the people of India for honoring the life and achievements of the late leader.
