Niger State Government Cautions Locals to Avoid Areas with Suspected Land Mines Amid Terrorist Activity

The Niger State government has issued a warning for residents of the Basa and Shiroro local government areas to restrict their movement until military operations can confirm that areas suspected to contain land mines planted by terrorists are safe.

The caution was announced by the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Bello Abdullahi, following the 2024 Base Socio-Cultural Activities (BASA) event, which was held at the 013 Quick Response Force base of the Nigerian Air Force in Minna. Abdullahi emphasized that locals should remain vigilant, as the military continues to clear the affected areas of any explosive devices left behind by terrorists.

Abdullahi explained that the military must first complete demining operations in the region before it is deemed safe for residents to move around without the risk of explosion. He also highlighted the disturbing development that terrorists have begun planting bombs in agricultural areas, further escalating the security challenges in Niger State. This action, he said, is a reflection of the intensifying efforts by the military to combat terrorism and banditry in the area.

BASA, an annual event marking the end of a successful operational year for the 013 Quick Response Force, is a celebration that showcases the cultural heritage of the Nigerian Air Force personnel and strengthens unity among service members, their families, and the local community. During the event, Governor Umaru Bago, represented by Abdullahi, reiterated the state government’s awareness of the threat posed by land mines in the Shiroro area and expressed reliance on the military’s efforts to clear the area.

Group Captain Austine Idoko, the commander of the 013 Quick Response Force, also reassured the public of the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to continuing operations aimed at eliminating terrorist and bandit activities in Niger State.

In a poignant moment, the wives of military personnel attending the event shared their hopes and prayers for the safe return of their husbands currently serving in the fight against insurgency and banditry.

The warning came after a tragic incident on December 19, 2024, when three bomb explosions rocked the Bassa community in Shiroro, resulting in three deaths and five injuries. Residents of the community have reported that there may be more bombs planted in the area by the terrorists, further heightening the need for caution and military intervention.
