President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Monday, January 6, for Accra, Ghana, where he will attend the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7.
Tinubu’s trip is at the invitation of Mahama, who had visited the Nigerian leader in December 2024. A statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the president’s attendance at the ceremony.
Mahama, who served as Ghana’s president from 2011 to 2017, was reelected in December 2024, and will succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose term ends in 2025.
The statement highlighted the longstanding personal relationship between President Tinubu and Mahama, as well as the enduring diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana. As the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu will join other African leaders at the inauguration.
Accompanying President Tinubu on the trip will be the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior government officials. This will mark Tinubu’s second official visit to Ghana since taking office.
