Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Idris Mohammed Gobir, has announced the establishment of a committee to assess the damage caused by the recent fire that devastated a local market. He further emphasized the need for preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
During a visit to the scene, Gobir extended his condolences to the affected traders and reassured them of the state government’s commitment to supporting the victims. The fire, which reportedly destroyed around 50 shops, also wiped out 132 grinding machines and a significant amount of food items, including rice, millet, and beans, amounting to millions of naira in losses.
The deputy governor stressed the importance of safety precautions, particularly during the harmattan season, when the risk of fire is heightened. Gobir assured that the government would take swift action and provide aid to the victims once the committee completes its assessment.
Local business leaders also weighed in on the devastating impact of the fire. Malam Yakubu Bello, Chairman of the Grinders Association, confirmed the heavy toll the disaster had taken, especially with the destruction of grinding machines that are crucial to the functioning of the market. Bashar Nuhu, Chairman of the Youth Traders Association, thanked Gobir for his visit and called for immediate government intervention to assist the affected traders.
