Kogi Governor Ododo Emphasizes Commitment to Education During Unscheduled School Visit

Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has stated that his administration’s decision to cover students’ WAEC fees should not be seen as an act of generosity but rather as a fulfillment of his duties as an elected official.

The governor made the remarks on Tuesday during an unscheduled visit to the GYB Model Science School in Adankolo, Lokoja, the state capital. His visit aimed to assess the school’s progress and the well-being of the students. Speaking to the students, Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to prioritizing education in the state.

He explained that paying the WAEC fees was part of his government’s broader commitment to improving access to quality education. “This should not be seen as doing you a favour; this is simply what we are elected to do,” Ododo said. He added that his administration would continue to support students through bursaries and scholarships as they progress to higher education.

“I know firsthand the struggles of not having wealthy parents. I understand the challenges of education, and as your governor, I will ensure you do not face those same challenges,” Ododo told the students.

He also stressed the importance of education in shaping a prosperous future for the state. “Our state looks to you to build a brighter future, and how we invest in your education today will determine what we get from you tomorrow. I won’t fail you,” the governor said.

The governor also shared a personal anecdote from his youth, recounting how he was unable to shake hands with former Governor Abubakar Audu when he visited his own secondary school. As a result, Ododo made a point to shake hands with every student in the class during his visit, which was met with great enthusiasm.

The principal of the school, Ajofe Godwins, expressed gratitude to the governor for his support of education in the state. “It is rare to find a state funding three full-fledged universities, among other institutions,” the principal remarked, highlighting the government’s ongoing investment in educational infrastructure.

Godwins also reflected on the progress made since the school’s establishment. He recalled that former Governor Yahaya Bello had visited the school in 2016 and promised to build a new model school. That promise was fulfilled with the commissioning of the new school building by former President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2022.

Governor Ododo’s visit underscored his administration’s resolve to continue enhancing the educational sector in Kogi, ensuring that students have the necessary resources and opportunities to succeed.
