The Nigerian military has intensified its operations against notorious terrorist kingpin Bello Turji, successfully closing in on his hideouts following a series of airstrikes on his strongholds in North-Western Nigeria.
The operation, which targets Turji’s network operating across Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger states, is gaining momentum as security forces make significant strides.
On Wednesday, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed the death of Aminu Kanawa, Turji’s second-in-command, during an ongoing military offensive. The DHQ also reported that several key members of Turji’s inner circle, including his younger brother, Dosso, and another close ally, Danbokolo, sustained severe injuries. This follows a series of successful operations, including the killing of key commanders and fighters linked to the terrorist leader.
Turji, a notorious figure in the region, had vowed to ramp up violence in 2025, targeting communities in Zamfara in retaliation for the arrest of his associate, Bako Wurgi, in late 2024. The military’s recent successes are seen as a significant blow to his operations, especially after several of his commanders were neutralized in the latest offensive.
The outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, provided further details on the military’s progress, saying that over 24 of Turji’s fleeing fighters were killed when troops stormed his hideout in the Sokoto and Zamfara regions. He added that a notable terrorist named Suleiman, a former ally of the deceased terrorist leader Halilu Sububu, was also killed during the operation.
“The death of Turji’s second-in-command, key commanders, and other members of his group represents a major setback to the terrorist network and their ability to continue carrying out attacks,” Buba stated. He emphasized that the military would not relent until Turji and his network were completely neutralized, and peace was restored to the affected regions.
This military success has been met with praise from residents of Sokoto and Zamfara, who have long suffered under Turji’s terror. Abubakar Isa, a resident of Isa in Sokoto State, welcomed the news, noting that the people in his area have endured decades of suffering due to Turji’s banditry, which had decimated local economies and disrupted daily life.
In light of the growing success of military operations, the Sokoto State government has urged citizens to remain vigilant. A statement issued by the Special Adviser on Security Matters, retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, reminded residents to report suspicious activities, particularly with bandits fleeing military pressure.
“There is an increase in bandits moving towards other areas with injuries. We urge the people to stay alert and report anything unusual. Some bandits may attempt to blend into villages or seek medical care at local clinics under false pretenses,” the statement warned.
The government reiterated its commitment to supporting the military and ensuring the safety and stability of Sokoto State. It also stressed the importance of continued cooperation between the authorities and the local community to eradicate the remaining threats posed by Turji and other terrorist factions.
