Republican Lawmaker Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Allow Trump to Seek Third Term

A Republican representative, Andy Ogles, has introduced a bill on Thursday aimed at allowing former President Donald Trump to run for a third term in office. The resolution seeks to amend the U.S. Constitution, which currently restricts any individual to serving no more than two terms as president.

Ogles’ proposed amendment would revise the 22nd Amendment to read: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times…”

In a statement, Ogles explained that Trump had “proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness.” He further argued that Trump should be given more time to complete his vision for the country.

“It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration,” Ogles said. “He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him.”

Ogles pointed to Trump’s early executive actions in his second term, including policies related to border security, energy production, gender identity, and withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO), as evidence of the need for a third term.

Though Trump has previously denied interest in a third term, he hinted at the possibility after winning the 2024 election, suggesting that Republican lawmakers might alter the rules to allow him to stay in office longer. “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something,” Trump had said in a conversation with GOP leaders. “Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, was introduced to prevent another situation like that of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was elected four times and served from 1933 until his death in 1945. The amendment was enacted to prevent any future president from accumulating too much power, following George Washington’s precedent of voluntarily stepping down after two terms.

Ogles’ proposal arrives as Republicans maintain a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, with a current three-seat lead.
