Impeachment not end of the world, Obasa speaks, denies corruption allegations

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has responded to the corruption allegations that led to his removal, calling them “fictitious and unsubstantiated.” Speaking at a welcome rally held at his residence in Joel Ogunnaike GRA, Ikeja, on Saturday, Obasa expressed that he was not afraid of impeachment but insisted that the proper procedures should have been followed.

Obasa claimed that his removal was orchestrated while he was away and accused the State Commissioner of Police of facilitating the process. He alleged that security agents, under the direction of the Police Commissioner, raided the Assembly complex as well as his homes in Agege and Ikeja, locking his family inside while more than 200 officers were deployed.

“If I am not Speaker, that’s not the end of the world. If you want to claim that I am corrupt, please prove it,” Obasa stated.

He rejected the accusations of misappropriation, mocking the claim that a gate construction had cost N16 billion, asking rhetorically, “Is it the wall of Jericho?”

Obasa was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house over alleged misconduct and various offenses. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to hold the position in the South-West state.

Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was first elected to the House in 2007 and had been serving in the chamber ever since. He became Speaker in June 2015.
