A two-storey building under construction has collapsed in the Ikota area of Lekki, Lagos, late Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of two adult males, with fears that more victims could still be trapped beneath the debris.
The coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Lagos Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident and stated that the immediate cause of the collapse remains unclear. “We received a distress call reporting the building collapse in Ikota, Ajah,” Farinloye explained. “Upon arriving at the scene, it was found that a two-storey building under construction had caved in.”
So far, rescue teams have recovered the bodies of an adult male and a young boy, while five other adult males have been rescued with serious injuries and are being treated in nearby hospitals.
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with local emergency agencies, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), working tirelessly to locate and save any remaining victims trapped in the rubble.
Spokesperson for LASEMA Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that heavy-duty equipment has been deployed to assist with the recovery operations. “Our teams, along with other key agencies, are working around the clock to ensure that all survivors are found,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the collapse, with the possibility that structural or safety issues at the site may have played a role in the tragedy.
