Court sacks Ogun monarch, warns govt against impunity

The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has annulled the installation of Alexander Macgregor as the Olu of Ilawo, declaring the process illegal and ordering him to cease presenting himself as the monarch.

Justice Olatokunbo Majekodunmi, who delivered the ruling, criticized the Ogun State Government for proceeding with Macgregor’s installation despite ongoing court cases, calling it a clear disregard for judicial authority.

The ruling followed a lawsuit filed by the Ogunsanya-Ariku Royal Family of Ilawo, which challenged the selection process that led to Macgregor’s appointment. The family claimed that the process was marred by irregularities, alleging that traditional warrant chiefs approved by the Ilawo council of chiefs were replaced with unfamiliar names to manipulate the outcome.

Justice Majekodunmi emphasized the importance of respecting the court’s authority, stating, “It is impunity and disregard for this court for the defendant to proceed with the installation of the 7th defendant (Macgregor) despite the pending court case. Once a case is ongoing, no action should be taken that undermines the integrity of the court.”

The court issued a mandatory injunction, directing that all symbols of office, including the staff of office, be withdrawn from Macgregor. Additionally, the judge restored the Olu of Orile Ilawo’s stool to its original status until the resolution of the case.

Reacting to the ruling, David Ogunsanya, the Secretary to the Ogunsanya-Ariku dynasty, praised the judiciary for upholding justice. He described the annulment of Macgregor’s installation as a victory for the rule of law.
