Leader of the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Services (NHFSS) in Abia State Sunday Chukwudiegwu Mmeribe, has revealed that his team has successfully cleared criminal elements from forests around Umuahia, the state capital.
The team’s operations, which have been ongoing since 2016, have focused on combating criminal activities like drug dealing, kidnapping, and child trafficking, with a significant redu ction in such incidents reported in the region.
Mmeribe explained that their efforts have been largely supported by tip-offs from local farmers and intelligence gathered from traditional rulers. He emphasized the collaboration with other security agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which has been crucial in the arrest and timely handover of suspects.
One of the key areas that has seen major improvements is the Ikpa forest, situated between Ubaha and Umuezeoma in Umuahia North LGA. This forest had previously been a hotspot for criminal activities that hindered local farmers, especially women, from accessing their farms due to harassment and assaults. Mmeribe noted that these criminal activities have been significantly reduced, allowing farmers to resume work without fear.
While praising the efforts of Governor Alex Otti in tackling crime across Abia State, Mmeribe appealed for more resources to enhance their operations, particularly functional vehicles, which have been lacking. He urged the state government to provide the necessary support to further improve security and enable the hunters to carry out their duties effectively.
