The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has defended the continued tenure of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, asserting that it is “legal and lawful.”
He emphasized that Egbetokun is statutorily and constitutionally entitled to remain in office as IGP until October 31, 2027, despite reaching the retirement age in September 2024.
Fagbemi made this statement in a release on Thursday, responding to mounting criticism from various quarters questioning the IGP’s alleged extension of tenure.
The relevant section of the Police Act affirms the IGP’s four-year term, but the matter is now subject to judicial determination, with the courts expected to rule on the pending suit challenging the IGP’s tenure.
