EFCC Arraigns Former NHIS Boss Usman Yusuf on Fraud Charges

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought former National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Executive Secretary, Usman Yusuf, before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Kuje, Abuja, on five amended charges related to alleged fraud.

Yusuf, who appeared before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him in court. His legal counsel, O.I. Habeeb, requested that the former NHIS boss be remanded in the EFCC’s custody pending a bail hearing.

However, Justice Nwecheonwu clarified that Yusuf, upon his arraignment, was no longer under the EFCC’s custody. Consequently, she ordered that Yusuf be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, until the hearing of his bail application, which is set for February 12, 2025.

The charges against Yusuf center on allegations that he used his position to gain personal benefits between 2016 and 2017, including awarding contracts without adhering to the proper procurement procedures.
