Bayelsa NOA Launches Sensitization Campaign Amid Cholera Outbreak

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Bayelsa has launched a statewide sensitization campaign to alert residents about the ongoing cholera outbreak in the state. The initiative follows the confirmation of the outbreak by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Seiyefa Brisibe, on January 26.

The acting state Director of NOA in Bayelsa Grace Olobio, issued a statement on Sunday urging residents to remain vigilant and adopt improved hygiene practices to prevent the spread of the disease. Olobio highlighted that the cholera outbreak was likely caused by contamination of water sources and poor sanitation facilities in the affected areas.

The symptoms of cholera, as described by Olobio, include diarrhea, dehydration, low blood pressure, sunken eyes, extreme thirst, rapid weight loss, dry skin, and vomiting. She emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures such as boiling water before drinking, frequent handwashing with soap and clean water, and avoiding the consumption of raw or undercooked foods.

In addition, Olobio urged the public to refrain from open defecation and improper waste disposal practices, which contribute to the spread of the disease. She reassured residents to remain calm but stressed the importance of seeking medical attention if cholera symptoms appear.

The cholera outbreak, which was initially reported by the Bayelsa Non-Governmental Organizations Forum (BANGOF), has reportedly resulted in fatalities, particularly in Nembe Local Government Area. There have been criticisms directed at the government for its initial delay in confirming the outbreak, with some health workers and local chiefs expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation.

BANGOF Chairman, Taritein Boco, expressed frustration with the government’s delay in releasing clinical test results, noting that the symptoms observed were consistent with cholera, including “rice water stool.” Some prominent chiefs in Nembe also voiced concerns, accusing the government of downplaying the issue for political reasons.

As the cholera outbreak continues to raise alarm, the NOA’s awareness campaign aims to curb its spread and ensure that the residents of Bayelsa take immediate precautions to protect their health.
