Suspected Herdsmen Attack in Ebonyi State, Killings and Destruction Reported

Suspected herdsmen attacked the Amegu Nkalaha Community in Ishielu Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, on Sunday, resulting in an unknown number of deaths and widespread destruction. Numerous houses were set ablaze during the attack.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu stating that police operatives have been deployed to the area. However, he emphasized that the exact number of casualties is still being investigated.

The chairperson of Ishielu Local Government Area Ifeoma Agwu, also confirmed the attack. She mentioned that the bodies of the victims are currently being recovered and transported to the morgue, but further details would be provided later as the situation evolves.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but some residents speculated that it might be linked to the recent killing of cows belonging to herdsmen in the area. According to an anonymous community member, the cows were allegedly killed by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the nearby forest. This incident has heightened tensions in the community, with local stakeholders reportedly working to prevent further retaliatory violence.

As authorities continue to investigate the attack and its causes, the situation remains tense in the affected area.
