El Salvador Offers to Take in U.S. Criminals and Migrants

El Salvador has agreed to house violent US criminals and accept deportees of any nationality under a controversial and unprecedented deal announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday.

The agreement, reached after Rubio’s meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, has raised concerns among critics and human rights groups for its legal and ethical implications.

Rubio described the deal as a remarkable act of “extraordinary friendship,” highlighting El Salvador’s commitment to continue accepting Salvadoran deportees who illegally entered the US.

The country also agreed to accept and incarcerate criminals from any nationality—including members of notorious gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua—in its jails.

Additionally, Bukele offered to house dangerous US criminals, including US citizens and legal residents, in Salvadoran prisons. However, it remains unclear whether the US government will accept this offer, as deporting US nationals to another country would likely face significant legal challenges.
