Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday provided an update on the progress of the second phase of the Adiyan Water Works, revealing that once completed, the project will provide 70 million gallons of water daily to residents.
During an inspection at the water works located in Ogun State, the governor noted that the project is 80 percent complete. He mentioned that key components of the project, including electromagnetic and electromechanical parts, such as pumps, are already on-site, and installation work will begin shortly.
Sanwo-Olu further disclosed that around 70 to 75 percent of the required equipment, especially for raw water intake, has been delivered. Work is currently underway to lay pipes from Akute to the Ogun River, which will supply water to the Adiyan Water Works. The contractor has assured the governor that the project will be fully completed within 10 to 12 months.
The governor expressed his appreciation for both the contractor and the local community’s cooperation in ensuring the success of the project. He also acknowledged the payment of compensation by both the Lagos and Ogun state governments to affected communities.
While the project has made significant strides, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that there is still more work to be done, particularly in transmission and capacity building. He stressed that providing potable water is a critical responsibility of the government, especially in a megacity like Lagos.
This initiative is part of the ongoing effort to improve the quality of life for Lagos residents, with a future plan to extend water supply across the Lagos Lagoon to the island, including areas like Ikoyi and Lekki. Sanwo-Olu assured that this project will contribute significantly to the state’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.
