Suicide Bomber Kills Five Outside Bank in Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed five people, including Taliban security forces, in an explosion outside a bank in northern Afghanistan on Tuesday, according to police. The attack also left seven people injured and targeted a crowd waiting to collect their salaries at a bank in Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province.

Jumadin Khaksar, a police spokesman for Kunduz, confirmed that the bomber detonated improvised explosive devices, resulting in civilian, civil servant, and Taliban security force casualties.

“The Kunduz Province Police Command is working with relevant authorities to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” Khaksar said.

This attack follows a similar bombing in March of last year, when a suicide bomber killed at least three people outside a bank in Kandahar, an attack later claimed by the Islamic State’s regional chapter. No group has yet claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s bombing.

Although bombings and suicide attacks have decreased since the Taliban took power in August 2021, ending their insurgency, several armed groups, including ISIS, continue to pose a threat.
