IGP Warns Police Officers Against Rights Violations, Misconduct, and Unapproved Transfers

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to police officers across the country to refrain from rights violations and other forms of misconduct.

In a virtual meeting with police managers on Monday, the IGP emphasized that no officer should be seen carrying assault rifles or other firearms while dressed in civilian clothes (mufti). He made the remarks following numerous complaints received through the Force’s official complaint channels.

“The IGP has made it clear that any act violating human rights will not be tolerated and will face serious consequences,” said Force Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi in a statement.

Additionally, the IGP cautioned all tactical squads about the improper use of power and the importance of adhering to approved uniforms. He stressed that all officers must operate in accordance with the standard operating procedures and be dressed in the assigned uniforms for their respective squads.

The IGP also addressed the issue of unauthorized transfers, warning officers against the indiscriminate transfer of cases without written approval from his office. He stated that this practice, which often results in unnecessary delays and complications, would no longer be tolerated.
