The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has presided over plenary, despite the escalating tensions and chaotic developments that unfolded earlier this morning.
The assembly’s chamber, as well as the Speaker’s office, were sealed off by officials from the Department of State Services (DSS).
The situation took a confrontational turn when DSS agents were seen inside the chamber, engaging in a physical altercation with legislative workers stationed at the chamber’s exit door.
Around 12:30 pm, lawmakers, backed by the support of assembly staff, successfully forced their way into the chamber. While the session is ongoing, the circumstances remain uncertain, with heightened security and an atmosphere of tension pervading the assembly.
This crisis is further intensified by an ongoing leadership struggle between the ousted Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa’s impeachment in 2023 followed allegations of financial misconduct and corruption, which sparked a fierce dispute within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obasa had been accused of mismanaging public funds, particularly through alleged fraudulent contracts and illicit financial dealings involving his personal accounts. Investigations into these claims led to calls for his removal, culminating in his impeachment.
Obasa, however, denied the accusations, asserting that they were politically motivated and aimed at undermining his leadership.
Since his removal, Obasa and his supporters have fiercely contested Meranda’s leadership, further deepening the divide within the assembly.
The dispute has resulted in a power struggle, with both factions vying for control, contributing to the current instability.
Adding to the unrest, security forces have maintained a heavy presence around the assembly complex.
At least 10 police vans have been stationed at the gate to ensure order, though the situation remains fraught with uncertainty as tensions continue to rise within the legislative body.
