The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that two suspects, believed to be involved in the murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the state house of assembly, have escaped from custody.
Azuka was abducted and attacked by gunmen on Christmas Eve while returning home for the holiday. His lifeless body was discovered earlier this month on the Second Niger Bridge.
The police spokesperson in Anambra Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the suspects’ escape in a statement on Tuesday night. The two suspects, who were being cooperative with police investigations, had accompanied officers in an operation aimed at arresting a receiver of stolen vehicles used by the criminal gang. However, they managed to escape during the operation.
Ikenga stated that the police commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu, received the report of the escape later that night. During the operation, the receiver was arrested, and two stolen vehicles were recovered. Unfortunately, the two suspects managed to flee the scene.
In response, the police commissioner has mobilized human, operational, and intelligence resources to track down and re-arrest the fugitives. Additionally, Ikenga announced that immediate disciplinary action will be taken against any officers found negligent in the escape of the suspects.
