The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has called for immediate action to address the escalating issues of drug abuse and domestic violence in Nigeria’s Northwest region.
Speaking at the flag-off event of the Northwest Zonal Sensitization Against Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence in Kaduna on Monday, Abbas highlighted the alarming rise in drug abuse, with a 25% increase in the Northwest over the past three years. He also pointed to a troubling 28% surge in drug seizures in Kaduna State alone in 2023.
“The situation is dire, and we must act swiftly to protect our youth from the destructive allure of drugs. We must also uphold the rights and dignity of every citizen, particularly women, who are disproportionately affected by domestic violence,” Abbas stated.
The Speaker also addressed the widespread issue of domestic violence, revealing that nearly 35% of women nationwide suffer some form of abuse. In the Northwest, the situation is even more severe, with up to 40% of women in Kano experiencing domestic abuse.
To combat these issues, Abbas emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach involving government agencies, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations. He praised the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in strengthening the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and implementing significant legal reforms to tackle domestic violence.
Abbas further underscored the critical role of traditional and religious leaders in fostering cultural change and promoting zero tolerance for abuse.
“We must work together to create a safer and more secure future for every Nigerian,” Abbas stressed.
The Northwest Zonal Sensitization Against Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence initiative seeks to educate citizens on the dangers of drug abuse and domestic violence, provide support services for victims, and promote community-based solutions.
“We must unite our efforts to protect our youth, uphold the rights and dignity of every citizen, and create a safer and more just society for all,” Abbas concluded.
