As the Muslim community prepares for the holy month of Ramadan, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has called for greater unity and integrity among Islamic scholars.
The President-General of JNI, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, made this appeal during the annual pre-Ramadan meeting held on Monday in Kaduna.
The theme of the meeting was “Social Media and Islamic Scholarship: Causes of Conflict Among Muslim Scholars.” In his address, the Sultan emphasized the importance of unity among Muslims. “We must unite as Muslims under one umbrella,” he said. “Though we may have differences in how we see and understand things, we must work together for the sake of Islam.”
He further urged that Muslims should not let their differences divide them to the point of insulting one another. “We must not allow our varying levels of understanding of Islam to cause division,” Abubakar emphasized, adding, “Nobody has a monopoly on knowledge—what you know, someone else knows better.”
The Sultan also stressed that by adhering to proper guidelines and ethics, scholars can help foster a positive and enriching Ramadan experience for all.
Earlier, the Secretary-General of JNI, Khalid Aliyu, spoke about the importance of responsible scholarship. He highlighted the critical role scholars play in promoting unity and understanding within the Muslim community, emphasizing that this can only be achieved by adhering to ethical scholarly standards and avoiding personal opinions and sectarian propaganda.
Aliyu also urged scholars to use social media responsibly and follow the guidelines established by JNI for Tafsir sessions. These guidelines focus on upholding proper scholarly ethics and avoiding divisive rhetoric.
He called on scholars to prioritize wisdom and humility in their teachings.
