Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned recent violent attacks in the state that have claimed the lives of 24 individuals.
The first incident, which took place in the agrarian community of Gbelemotin in Ovia South-West Local Government Area, saw clashes between cocoa farmers and alleged thieves of produce. While the Edo State Police Command reported seven deaths, Governor Okpebholo clarified that 22 people were killed in the conflict, which began last Thursday night and escalated into a counterattack on Friday morning by sympathizers of the victims.
The second attack occurred on Monday in the Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government Area, where two residents Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello were allegedly killed by suspected herders.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo emphasized the state government’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible for these brutal acts are brought to justice. He condemned the attacks, highlighting the destruction of buildings and farm produce worth millions of naira.
“We will not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness in Edo State,” the governor said. “We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Edo State residents. We will work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent such incidents from occurring again.”
Okpebholo has ordered the deployment of additional security forces to the affected areas and vowed to provide support to the impacted communities. He also urged residents to remain calm and go about their daily activities while the situation is being addressed.
“We will work closely with security agencies, traditional leaders, and community members to ensure peace and security in the state,” Okpebholo added.
