Aviation Workers Protest Secret Plans to Concession Port Harcourt Airport

Aviation workers at Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State took to the streets on Wednesday in a powerful solidarity march, voicing their concerns over an alleged covert plan by the Federal Government to concession the airport without consulting them.

Under the leadership of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), workers carried placards demanding transparency and inclusion in the concession process.

Razaq Animashaun, Chairman of ATSSSAN, explained that the protest was aimed at raising awareness about what they describe as a “secret” proposal to concession the airport. “We are here to let the Federal Government know that we are not involved in what’s happening. Our national body directed us to hold this march to reassure our members and make it clear that we should be included in any concession process that impacts our workers,” Animashaun said.

The unions’ concerns stem from recent government activities, including visits and requests for sensitive data, which they believe point to imminent plans to concession the airport. “If there wasn’t a secret concession in the works, why would they be asking for our financial records, staff numbers, and other key information?” Animashaun questioned.

While the unions are not fundamentally opposed to the idea of airport concessions, they are strongly against any process that excludes key stakeholders, particularly the workers who could be directly affected. “If the airport is going to be concessioned, we want to be part of the process so that we can protect our staff and prevent job losses,” he added.

ANAP Chairman at the airport, Akagha Emmanuel, expressed concerns about the government’s plans moving forward despite the ongoing court case. “We have no issue with the planned concession, but we demand to be part of it. The workers need to know their fate. How will they be treated before and after the concession?” Emmanuel said.

The unions are seeking assurances on the treatment of staff after any potential concession, particularly regarding job security and compensation. “The government needs to include the union, pensioners, and staff in these discussions. If you are going to concession the airport, involve us,” Emmanuel stressed.

Last October, the Federal Government announced plans to concession five major Nigerian airports, including Port Harcourt International Airport, as part of a larger infrastructure development strategy.

However, the lack of consultation with key stakeholders has sparked significant unrest, with workers demanding that their voices be heard before any major decisions are made.
