Governor Okpebholo Calls for Urgent Protection as 24 Lives Lost in Edo Violence

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the recent spate of violence in the state, which has tragically claimed the lives of 24 people.

The attacks, which took place in different parts of the state, have sparked widespread concern and calls for immediate action.

The first wave of violence, which erupted between cocoa farmers and alleged produce thieves in the farming community of Gbelemotin, Ovia South-West Local Government Area, resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals. Initially reported as seven fatalities by the Edo State Police Command, subsequent investigations have confirmed the higher toll.

The violence, which began on Thursday night, escalated on Friday morning when supporters of the victims retaliated, leading to more deaths and injuries.

In a separate incident, two residents from Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government Area, Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, were killed on Monday by suspected herders, further heightening tensions in the region.

In a statement released by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Okpebholo reiterated the state government’s unwavering stance against violence and lawlessness. The governor emphasized that those responsible for these brutal attacks will face justice.

“The state government is deeply saddened by these heinous acts. The killing of two farmers, Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, in Okpekpe, and the deadly assault on seven farming communities in Ovia South-West, which left 22 dead and many more injured, is a tragedy we cannot ignore,” Okpebholo said. “We will not tolerate violence in Edo State. We will work relentlessly with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable.”

The governor further revealed that additional security personnel had been deployed to the affected areas and pledged continued support for the communities impacted by the violence.

“We are fully committed to the safety and security of all Edo residents,” Okpebholo continued. “We will collaborate closely with security forces, traditional rulers, and local leaders to ensure peace and stability. We urge the public to remain calm and assured that the government is actively working to restore order and prevent further escalation.”

As the state grapples with these tragic events, Governor Okpebholo’s firm commitment to restoring peace and bringing the perpetrators to justice offers a glimmer of hope for affected communities.
