The ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, has declared that he has resumed his role as the parliament’s leader.
Obasa made this announcement on Thursday after returning to the Assembly for the first time since his impeachment on January 13. He arrived with police and State Security Service (SSS) personnel in tow, further escalating the ongoing political drama.
“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa stated.
Obasa’s impeachment on January 13 had been backed by an overwhelming majority of lawmakers, who then appointed Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the first female Speaker of the Assembly. However, Meranda has faced difficulties in fully taking control of the House, and no fresh leadership election has been held to officially reinstate Obasa.
The former Speaker, who has filed a lawsuit contesting his removal, continues to await a court ruling on the matter. His return marks the latest development in a political crisis that has disrupted the usual political unity within Lagos, a state known for its cohesive political structure.
