FCCPC Directs MultiChoice to Maintain Current Subscription Prices Amid Investigation

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has ordered MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to maintain its current subscription prices until the conclusion of an ongoing investigation into the company’s proposed tariff hike. This directive was issued after the company requested an extension for its scheduled appearance before the FCCPC regarding concerns over its recurring price increases.

FCCPC announced this decision in a statement on Thursday, signed by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu. The commission’s action comes as MultiChoice notified its customers of a planned price adjustment, which included an increase in the DStv Compact package, while leaving the Compact Plus and Premium bouquets unchanged at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively. The adjustment was set to take effect from March 1, 2025.

In response to the concerns raised, FCCPC granted MultiChoice a postponement for its appearance, rescheduling the session for March 6, 2025. The commission has mandated the company’s CEO and relevant officers to attend and provide a comprehensive response to the investigation.

The FCCPC also clarified that MultiChoice is now explicitly instructed to keep its existing prices as of February 27, 2025, during the investigation. This decision is aimed at preventing potential exploitation of consumers while the review is underway.

Earlier, MultiChoice had announced the price adjustments in a notice to its customers, explaining that the review was necessary to sustain its ability to deliver quality content. However, the announcement had generated concerns among subscribers, prompting the FCCPC’s intervention.
