FRSC and NUPENG Unite to Combat Tanker Crashes in Anambra

In a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at tackling the persistent issue of tanker accidents and related fatalities, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has pledged to work closely with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to address the growing concern.

During a meeting with NUPENG executives, Corps Commander Joyce Alexander emphasized the critical need for a united effort in tackling the rampant road mishaps caused by tankers in the state.

The Sector Commander expressed her commitment to forging a sustainable solution to the crisis that has continued to claim lives and pose significant risks to road safety.

A statement released on Saturday by the Sector’s Public Education Officer, Margaret Onabe, highlighted the mutual understanding between the FRSC and NUPENG regarding the importance of structural changes, including the establishment of truck parks in line with United Nations road traffic regulations.

“The FRSC Anambra Command is fully committed to working with NUPENG to curb the alarming rate of tanker accidents in our state,” the statement read. “We urge private truck owners to ensure that their vehicles are registered, and that their drivers strictly adhere to road safety regulations.”

The Corps Commander also called on NUPENG to actively facilitate monthly public enlightenment campaigns for truck drivers, aiming to reinforce road safety awareness across the board.

Earlier in the discussions, NUPENG Chairman Izuchukwu Onaka raised concerns over the state of the roads, emphasizing that poor road conditions remain one of the leading causes of tanker accidents.

Onaka urged both the state and federal governments to prioritize urgent road repairs and improvements. He further stressed the need for designated truck parks, where drivers could safely rest and avoid the dangers of nighttime travel.

The partnership culminated in plans for an upcoming Town Hall meeting, where tanker and truck operators will convene to discuss critical safety issues and propose viable solutions to the tanker crisis.

Both the FRSC and NUPENG reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing road safety in Anambra, vowing to reduce tanker-related accidents and ensure safer highways for all road users.

This collaboration marks a significant step in the fight for safer roads in Anambra, combining expertise and resources to protect lives and reduce the devastating impact of tanker accidents across the state.
