Rivers Government Responds to Assembly’s 48-Hour Ultimatum on 2025 Budget

The Rivers State Government has stated that it has not yet received the resolutions from the State House of Assembly regarding the Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on February 28, 2025.

This comes in response to an ultimatum issued by the Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, which directed Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 budget within 48 hours.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, the government clarified that as of the close of business on March 4, neither the Governor’s office, the Deputy Governor’s office, nor the Accountant-General’s office had received any communication from the Assembly regarding the budget.

Although the letter did not directly name the Speaker of the Assembly, it emphasized the lack of receipt of the official resolutions. The government’s response also referred to a state broadcast made by Governor Fubara on March 2, in which he reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law. During the broadcast, the governor stated that despite any personal views on the Supreme Court’s ruling, he would fully respect and implement the judgment in the best interest of the state and in adherence to the rule of law.

The government’s letter further explained that its legal team is still awaiting a certified true copy of the Supreme Court’s judgment and assured the public that the governor would act swiftly once the official document is received.

The development adds to the growing political tensions in the state, with key stakeholders closely monitoring how the Supreme Court’s decision will impact the state’s governance.
