President Bola Tinubu has praised former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman,” acknowledging his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s development and his influential role in shaping the nation’s political landscape.
In a birthday tribute marking Obasanjo’s 88th birthday on Wednesday, Tinubu recognized the former president’s decades of service to Nigeria, highlighting his leadership as both a military and civilian head of state. Tinubu noted that Obasanjo’s interventions in national affairs though sometimes controversialhave been instrumental in shaping public policy and keeping leadership in check.
“Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s history,” Tinubu stated. He went on to recall Obasanjo’s pivotal role in the Nigerian Civil War, where as a colonel in the Nigerian Army, he famously received the instrument of surrender from the Biafran Army Commander, Col. Philip Effiong, in 1970.
The President also highlighted Obasanjo’s leadership during the aftermath of General Murtala Muhammed’s assassination in 1976, commending his role in overseeing Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule in 1979. Tinubu further noted that in 1999, after being freed from prison, Obasanjo emerged as a civilian president, ushering in the rebirth of Nigeria’s democracy—a process that has now lasted for 25 years and continues to thrive.
Beyond his time in office, Tinubu praised Obasanjo for his continued influence both in Nigeria and internationally. Describing him as an “ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter,” Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s efforts in conflict resolution and governance advocacy, which have earned him respect across Africa and the world.
“Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and acted as a check on leadership,” Tinubu remarked.
The President concluded his tribute by lauding Obasanjo’s statesmanship, dedication to national unity, and commitment to Nigeria’s progress. He prayed for continued strength and wisdom for the former president, wishing him many more years of service to Nigeria and Africa.
“At 88, the former president is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” Tinubu added.
