In a significant move aimed at improving healthcare delivery, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved an impressive ₦10.3 billion for the procurement of essential health commodities, including antiretroviral drugs for HIV treatment, diabetes diagnostic kits, and vital medical equipment.
The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ali Pate, made the announcement during a briefing with State House correspondents, outlining how these investments will enhance the accessibility and affordability of healthcare services for Nigerians.
The funding comes as part of an ongoing effort to prioritize domestic health financing amidst global health challenges.
Among the key allocations, ₦997 million will be dedicated to securing third-line antiretroviral drugs for individuals living with HIV, ensuring that patients continue receiving the critical care they need despite shifts in global health financing.
Dr. Pate emphasized the importance of these medications, stating, “This is a crucial move, given the changes in global health financing and the shift toward domestic solutions to meet the needs of our citizens.”
In a bid to tackle the rising tide of diabetes in the country, FEC also approved funding for locally manufactured diagnostic kits for the disease, a move that is set to revolutionize diabetes care in Nigeria.
Dr. Pate highlighted the increasing incidence of diabetes, with many Nigerians unaware of their condition, and noted that a Lagos-based private company would be responsible for the production of these test kits. “By supporting local manufacturers, we are stimulating the healthcare value chain and ensuring Nigerians have access to critical diagnostics.”
Alongside these, ₦4.5 billion will be allocated to procure antibiotics, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic medications, in line with the President’s directive to reduce the cost of medical commodities and make healthcare more affordable for the Nigerian population.
In a further boost to healthcare infrastructure, the FEC also approved ₦2.1 billion for the purchase of a mobile X-ray machine and the rehabilitation of a 64-slice CT scan at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.
This state-of-the-art equipment will elevate the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities, transforming it into a leading referral center not only for Bauchi State but for the entire region.
These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to unlocking the potential of local manufacturing, improving healthcare accessibility, and ultimately improving the quality of life for Nigerians across the country.
The procurement and strategic allocation of these funds are set to enhance both preventive and curative healthcare services, paving the way for a healthier future for all Nigerians.
