Renowned Nigerian Novelist and Broadcaster Mabel Segun Passes Away at 95

Celebrated Nigerian novelist, tennis champion, broadcaster, and diplomat Mabel Segun, has passed away at the age of 95. Her family confirmed her death in a statement released late Thursday, announcing that she passed away in the early hours of the same day.

In the statement, her family expressed gratitude for her long and accomplished life, which spanned numerous fields including literature, broadcasting, and sports. The family revealed that funeral arrangements would be shared at a later date.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well spent in the pursuit of excellence in Literature, Broadcasting and Sports that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun (nee Aig-Imoukhuede),” the statement read.

Mabel Segun leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having broken barriers throughout her career and made significant contributions to Nigerian society. Born on February 18, 1930, Segun was a pioneer in many ways.

She attended the University College Ibadan (now University of Ibadan), graduating in 1953 with a degree in English Literature, Latin, and History. This marked the beginning of a distinguished career that would see her rise to prominence both within Nigeria and internationally.
