U.S. Mission Condemns Brutal Killing of Catholic Priest in Kaduna, Calls for Justice

The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed outrage over the tragic and senseless killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, a Catholic priest serving at St. Mary’s Church in Tachiri, Kaura Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

The U.S. Mission issued a strong condemnation on Thursday, calling the priest’s murder a horrific act of violence that has deeply shocked the international community.

Father Okechukwu, who had been a revered spiritual leader in his community, was abducted from his residence on the night of Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

His body was discovered just hours later, on Wednesday, March 5, sparking widespread outrage and sorrow both in Nigeria and abroad.

The U.S. Mission’s statement condemned the brutal act in no uncertain terms, labeling the killing as both “senseless” and “unjustifiable.” “We are deeply distressed by the tragic and senseless killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu in Kaduna State, Nigeria,” the mission stated. “We strongly condemn this horrific act of violence and stand with the people of Nigeria in their mourning.”

The subsequent discovery of his lifeless body has sent shockwaves through the local community in Kaduna, where Father Okechukwu was deeply respected for his pastoral care and commitment to his flock.

His murder is believed to be part of a larger pattern of violence linked to armed banditry and criminal activity that has plagued northern Nigeria for years, affecting numerous communities and religious leaders.

Authorities in Kaduna are yet to make any formal arrests in connection to the crime. The US Mission has strongly urged the Nigerian government to investigate the killing thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, congregation, and community of Father Okechukwu, who have suffered an immeasurable loss,” the statement continued.

Diplomatic Outcry and Call for Accountability
The killing of Father Okechukwu has sparked outrage not only in Nigeria but across the international community, with religious and human rights organizations calling for swift action.

The U.S. Mission’s statement went further in urging the Nigerian government to take immediate and decisive steps to bring those responsible for the priest’s death to justice.

In addition to offering condolences to the family and community affected by this loss, the U.S. Mission emphasized the importance of ensuring security and protecting religious figures in the region. “This senseless act underscores the urgent need for strengthened security measures to protect both citizens and religious leaders who play an essential role in society,” the statement read.

The U.S. Mission also reminded the Nigerian government of its responsibility to protect the rights of its citizens, particularly in the face of increasing criminal violence.

The appeal for justice resonated with calls from both local Nigerian groups and global watchdogs who have decried the rising tide of violent attacks against religious figures in the country.
