Rivers APC Chairman, Tony Okocha, Urges Governor Fubara to Resign or Face Impeachment

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called for the immediate resignation of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, warning that failure to step down could lead to impeachment.

Okocha made the statement during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, where he sharply criticized the governor’s actions following his invitation of 27 lawmakers to a meeting.

Fubara’s invitation came after the Supreme Court affirmed the lawmakers as the legitimate legislative body in Rivers State.

Okocha dismissed the invitation as a “Greek gift,” casting doubt on the sincerity of the governor’s gesture. He questioned whether Fubara, who had previously engaged in grandstanding, had now shifted his stance.

He stated, “The APC stands firm as the major opposition party in Rivers State, and we are the voice of the voiceless. When we say Governor Fubara is clueless, we are not joking— the evidence is glaring.

The governor may present himself as a saint, but behind that facade, he is a dangerous snake. The invitation to the lawmakers is puerile. Is he now calling them to discuss the Supreme Court judgment? Why was the letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government instead of the governor? This is nothing but a Greek gift.”

Okocha also expressed the party’s discontent with the governor’s disregard for both the law and President Bola Tinubu, whom he accused Fubara of disrespecting after the President’s intervention with an eight-point agenda to resolve the political crisis in the state. According to Okocha, most of the agenda items were never implemented by the governor.

He further stated, “The governor has run the state aground with his style of governance. The people of Rivers State can no longer stand by while he continues to lead the state in such a reckless manner.”

Okocha emphasized that Fubara had two options moving forward: he could either resign honorably or face impeachment. “If the governor refuses to resign, he will face impeachment. I don’t need to be in the Rivers State House of Assembly to know that he has committed numerous impeachable offenses. As it stands, there is no functioning government in Rivers State.”

The APC Chairman also warned of the potential consequences of the governor’s continued tenure, likening the current political climate in the state to a “keg of gunpowder” that could explode at any moment. “Rivers State is sitting on a ticking time bomb,” Okocha said, urging the governor to make an honorable exit.
