The Alaafin of Oyo-elect Oba Akeem Owoade, has expressed his determination to secure the return of cultural artefacts taken by the British in 1895. A statement issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, on Tuesday confirmed that Oba Owoade is committed to bringing these significant artefacts back to the kingdom, along with some form of compensation.
This move comes on the heels of Nigeria’s successful negotiation for the return of Benin artefacts, which had been looted during the 1897 British expedition and recently repatriated to the Oba of Benin. The return of these cultural items, which hold both spiritual and historical value, is seen as a crucial step in preserving Nigeria’s heritage and identity.
Oba Owoade stated, “I will ensure that the artefacts are returned and with some payments made as compensation,” signaling a strong stance on reclaiming lost cultural treasures. He further revealed that he had already entered discussions with international organizations that are backing his efforts to develop the Oyo kingdom.
In addition to his efforts to reclaim cultural artefacts, Oba Owoade outlined plans to address key social issues in the region. He pledged to create opportunities for job-seeking youths, particularly graduates, by offering vocational skills training to reduce unemployment. He also expressed a commitment to supporting widows and widowers, aiming to improve their socio-economic conditions.
The new Alaafin also vowed to continue the cultural legacies of his late predecessor, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, by promoting and enhancing the traditional festivals of Sango and Oranmiyan. He is also committed to providing cyber security training to degree holders and Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates to combat the increasing trend of emigration in search of better opportunities abroad.
Additionally, Oba Owoade emphasized his commitment to improving health facilities in the kingdom, an area he intends to focus on during his reign. He hopes his legacy will be marked by significant contributions to the welfare of his people, particularly in education and healthcare.
With these ambitious plans, Oba Owoade aims to usher in a new era of cultural revitalization and socio-economic progress for the Oyo kingdom.
