NPFL Lifts Ban on Sammy Wejinya

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has reversed the ban previously imposed on Sammy Wejinya. The decision came after Wejinya appeared before a panel to review his case following a formal request for retrial.

Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the NPFL, confirmed the board’s decision, stating that Wejinya had appeared before an investigative panel on March 3, 2025. During the session, Wejinya tendered a verbal apology and explained the circumstances surrounding his initial failure to attend the earlier invitation.

“Wejinya appeared before the panel following his letter of apology and appeal for a review of his case,” Elegbeleye said. “The panel acknowledged the circumstances of his absence and took into account the actions he had taken to remedy the situation, including his apology and willingness to appear before the panel.”

Elegbeleye emphasized that the NPFL Board always aims to correct, rather than punish, individuals involved in the league. He explained that their decisions are driven by the intent to correct behaviors, not harm players, officials, or clubs.

“Mr. Wejinya has made significant contributions to the NPFL through his media work, and this decision reflects our commitment to ensuring fairness,” Elegbeleye added.

The panel’s review also considered the physical injuries Wejinya had suffered and his material losses, which he provided evidence for during the retrial. However, Elegbeleye noted that while the board acknowledged the assault and losses Wejinya endured, he was reminded to use appropriate channels to address grievances, rather than escalating issues through the media.

Wejinya was suspended for the rest of the NPFL season after publishing a controversial story that was seen as damaging to the league’s reputation following an incident at the Lafia Township Stadium. He was further warned not to engage in any actions that could bring the league into disrepute, whether individually or in collaboration with others.
