The Anambra State Government has implemented a ban on mobile phones for students in all secondary schools across the state, aiming to reduce distractions and improve academic performance.
The Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission in the state Nkechi Ikediugwu, made the announcement on Friday during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration in Awka. She instructed all school principals and teachers to confiscate mobile phones brought to school by students.
Ikediugwu explained that the move was necessary to maintain discipline and ensure students remain focused on their studies. She pointed out that the growing use of mobile phones during school hours had become a significant distraction, interfering with students’ academic progress.
“I am authorising principals and teachers to seize phones from students who bring them to school, ensuring they concentrate fully on their academic work without the interference of phones,” Ikediugwu said.
She also highlighted the commitment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration to improving the state’s education sector by investing in initiatives that promote academic excellence and instill discipline among students.
In addition to the mobile phone ban, Ikediugwu celebrated the importance of Igbo traditions, emphasizing that they are integral to the identity of the people. “Igbo culture extends beyond clothing and dancing. The Igbos are also known for their honesty, truthfulness, hard work, and respect for elders, among other admirable qualities,” she said. She called for continuous education of students on these values to preserve the rich heritage of the Igbo people.
