Vice President Shettima Urges National Unity and Collaboration at Iftar with House of Representatives

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has called on the National Assembly to prioritize unity, national development, and the collective good over political divisions and partisan interests. He made the statement during an Iftar hosted by President Bola Tinubu for the leadership and members of the House of Representatives at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Shettima emphasized the sacred responsibility of leadership and urged lawmakers to approach their duties with humility and a shared commitment to progress. “In the end, history will not judge us by the number of personal battles we fought against one another, but by the bridges we were able to build together,” Shettima said. He added, “We are gathered here this evening not as adversaries in a contest for power, but as partners in the noble task of nation-building.”

Reflecting on the significance of Ramadan, Shettima called for introspection and reaffirmed the need for unity, stating that the sacred month reminds Nigerians to choose stability over strife, collaboration over conflict, and dialogue over discord. “What binds us as a nation is far greater than what divides us,” he stressed.

The Vice-President also commended President Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a “man of vision and inclusivity.” He further praised the President’s trust in the lawmakers, highlighting their essential role as stewards of democracy and partners in building a better Nigeria. Shettima also spoke positively about the country’s economic recovery, stating that the government’s policies were yielding positive results and putting Nigeria on a path to sustained economic growth. “We will create a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive,” he assured.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, thanked President Tinubu for the invitation and for consistently showing respect and concern for the legislature. Reflecting on the month of Ramadan, Abbas emphasized the importance of reflection, urging both Christians and Muslims to dedicate their fasting period to praying for the country’s peace, prosperity, and leadership.

Abbas also pledged full support from the House of Representatives for the President’s policies and actions, stressing that the current government’s efforts were focused on the betterment of the nation. He concluded by donating N705 million on behalf of the House of Representatives a six-month, 50% salary deduction from all members to support the humanitarian engagements of President Tinubu and assist vulnerable people across the country.

The event underscored a shared commitment among Nigeria’s leadership to prioritize unity, progress, and national development during a period of reflection and renewal.
